with Maryann Gibbons and Chandlyr Kay
the team behind the making of Artypants Magazine’s second issue themed → → Summer Places
Chandlyr Kay has been a critical voice in Artypants' original brand IDENTITY. she continues to provide that golden touch to elements behind our commitment to elevating each issue in ways that amplify all the participating artists while providing our own signature style.
Q: Tell us about new design elements you incorporated this second Artypants Magazine issue?
Chandlyr: Well before the launch of issue 02, we revisited the brand guide with the purpose of incorporating a handful of new colors, expanding the palette to invite in some brighter & lighter hues, especially as we moved into the summer.
We also introduced some new typefaces to our brand language, Epilogue and Beth Ellen. Epilogue was ultimately a better choice for overall legibility in lengthier bodies of text. Beth Ellen gave the magazine a nostalgic, hand-written flair that played very naturally with the essence of the theme, Summer Places.
Q: What's on your weekend shopping list?
Chandlyr: Is seafood an answer? lol. Summer makes me want to consume ALL of the shellfish.
But in all seriousness, I was recently invited to a wedding celebration for some new friends, and need to get a gift. One of my favorite places in Portland to grab a card is at Gus & Ruby Letterpress and I also love going to Viand Mercantile for gifts for the home.
Q: Where will you be re-reading issue 02 of APM?
Chandlyr: One of two places—on my chartreuse couch, burning some nag champa, and drinking a maple lemonade OR on the airplane, on the way to Wisconsin to visit my Mom and Grandma.
Q: Do you have any favorite SUMMER PLACES?
Chandlyr: Wow, this is a tough one because I love being outside, and summer is definitely my favorite season. I love the heat and the energy that comes with the season of summer. I’m not sure if I can choose a singular favorite spot, but I love a night where I can be with my favorite people, make a fire outside, and just laugh and be silly. I also love to climb a good mountain, or go for salty swim. I’m really not that picky. Nothing beats the feeling of getting to the top of a hike and knowing that you worked hard to get there.
I also want to add that at the beginning of this summer, I moved back to Maine after being away for a couple of years. It’s one of my absolute favorite places to be, and it was the best decision I could have ever made. Having the opportunity to reflect on the last couple of months validates that decision 1000x over again.
Below are a collection of moments (10 of many) that felt exceptionally special, and I feel incredibly lucky.
maryann gibbons conceptualized artypants in 2023 and has been mingling with artists online and irl since then.
Q: What's on your weekend shopping list?
Maryann: Probably circling local yard sales and finding the perfect summer tomato. Discovering a fresh candle or a taper set gives me all the feels.
Q: Where will you be re-reading issue 02 of APM?
Maryann: On any beach in South Shore, MA, where I live. I’m also always down for a 24-hour road trip in any New England spot. I’ll spend time in Provincetown, the White Mountains, and Boston for day trips. Also, I’m a robe person. I'm snuggled up in my bathrobe by 8pm.
Q: Do you have any favorite SUMMER PLACES?
Maryann: See above. Also, I went to Copenhagen for the second summer in a row. Danes understand embracing personal style. Not that trends are all sinister, but there’s more freedom and flow in daily life without the need for tidy lines and matching table chairs.
Q: Tell us about where you want Artypants to go?
Maryann: In order to help Artypants grow in the right ways, I am seeking community members to support development. We are looking for writers, copy editors, photographers, and individuals to form teams and collaborate on creating compelling stories about creative individuals. Our goal is to continue providing value to artists by offering them a platform where their work can be showcased and validated in print. This not only benefits the artists, but also enhances the experience for our readers, keeping them engaged and excited about each issue.
Finding aligned Ad Partnerships will also sustain our ability to evolve as visual designers, reinvigorating print design without traditional funding and exposure avenues. The scope to create is quite laborious. I warmly welcome participation from curious community members.
