Artist Date: create a found poem

by Maryann Gibbons, APM Editorial Director

We push ourselves to be productive to assert our worthiness. Sometimes, we really need to extend our creativity to shake loose a new perspective or give our brains a rest before we undertake the next project or begin our tax preparation.

Developing Issue 01 was done in silo over nine months. Chandlyr and I had met each other from our work in our previous brands but, interestingly enough, had never met in person. I approached Chandlyr for branding support and graphic design to build the brand of Artypants. As the issue started to come together, we met on Google Meet and maintained regular online communication. One day, Chandlyr shared a found poem she had made from a Marine Layer catalog. A short while later, I made one as well. There are so many ways this can be done, and it’s an incredible exercise to reinvigorate your mood, break a routine, and/or understand your feelings. What you can come up with can be revelatory and ignite your spirit.

Chandlyr Kay of Freckled Fushia and Maryann Gibbons of Plantsandponytails originally collaborated in 2021 when Chandlyr’s hand-drawn banana pots became an instant hit at the brick-and-mortar plant brand, swiftly selling out and causing a frenzy the in the houseplant space.

Tag your found poem #artypantsmag to help increase our readership and awareness of the print project!

While Chandlyr’s poem feels like peak summer fun, I went another route:

Leanne Ford’s magazine "Feel Free" was a major inspiration for us. Like hers, our magazine spotlights artists with striking visuals and interviews.

Maryann and Chandlyr will meet next week to talk about the continued development of Issue 02. Artist applications have been pouring in. To learn more about Maryann and Chandlyr we’ve created a Team page for you to check out!

Enjoy creating your own Found Poem. If the concept is of interest, you may want to explore another fun, similar activity. You can make a blackout poem. Alternatively recognized as erasure poetry, it involves a poet transforming an existing text by erasing, blacking out, or obscuring a significant portion. This process results in creating a completely new work from the remaining fragments.

Thanks for exploring your creative self and having Artypants along for the ride! If you want to support the extensive development efforts to put Issue 02 together, it would be fantastic if you could pre-order Issue 02. We are also seeking Ad Partners.
